The Austin-Healey brand released its first production car in 1953. Later, in 1958, the Sprite, affectionately nicknamed the "Frogeye" (or "Bugeye"), was introduced as a sports car aimed at younger drivers.
Equipped with a BMC (British Motor Corporation) engine producing 42.5 horsepower and weighing just 602 kg, it offered surprisingly capable performance for its size.
To meet North American safety standards, the headlights were positioned prominently on top of the bonnet, giving the car a cheerful, almost smiling expression—an endearing and iconic feature of its design.
